"I want to become a Christian. How do I do that?"
It isn't as hard as you may think to become a 'Christ-Follower' or
Christian. There are three basic steps.
The Three Steps.
- The first step is to decide not to do wrong things, or maintain hatreds
and vengeful attitudes. The Biblical word for this is
'repentance.' In addition to deciding not to do bad things, one must
decide to do good actions and to be helpful toward others. One must turn
from a selfish lifestyle, and turn toward God. You may have doubts about being
able to resist temptation and being able to maintain such a decision. Once Christ is in your heart
and life, Christ enables you to make good on that decision.
- In prayer, ask Jesus to come into the center of your life, and trust
him to do so. This involves a decision to let Christ be the leader of
your life. We come to Jesus just as we are with all our sins that we
are repentant of, and some of us may have pasts we are not proud of.
The good news is that Jesus loves sinners and wants us to be better people -
a people devoted to God. When you ask Jesus to come in, he will.
Jesus says in Revelation 3:20 the following:
"Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice
and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with
me."
- The third step is to confess it. Share your story with
someone. One traditional way to do this is to come at the close of a
Christian Worship Service and tell the preacher. But there are many
many ways of sharing your story. Certainly, the first thing a new
Christian should do is to get involved in a local church. Get involved
in a small group Bible study in that church. It is God's will that new
Christians be nurtured in a Christian environment where faith can grow.
If you are ready, you may wish to use the following prayer or one similar to
it to invite Christ into your life. Let's pray:
Dear Lord, I regret wrong actions I've done and bad attitudes I've
held. I regret putting my selfishness above others and above you. I
want to live and behave as you want me to. I ask you to forgive me of my
sins and wrongs. Lord Jesus, I open my heart, the center of my life, to
you and ask you to come in as my leader. Please rebuild my character to be
the kind of person you wish me to be. Fill me with Your strength and
presence for this life change. Thank you for coming into my heart and
making me a Christian. Amen.
