The Shape I Am In

Now you may not have noticed but I am just a little bit over weight… well all right I am a lot over weight.  But I don’t understand why?  Good grief, I must do a thousand  crunches everyday as I bend over pick up toys.  I lift weights, I carry a really big Bible and Gene is always telling me my purse weighs a ton.  And can I run?  I am running after my kids all the time but still  I am slightly larger than a size three.  And I can’t figure it out that is I couldn’t figure it out until recently when I was reading another minister’s newsletter.  It went like this:

“And God populated the earth with green and yellow vegetables of all kinds, so man and woman would live long and healthy lives.  And Satan created McDonalds.  And McDonalds brought forth the 99-cent double cheeseburger.  And Satan said to man,  ‘You want fries with that?’ and Man said, ‘Super-size them.’ And man gained pounds.   And God created the healthy  yogurt.  And Satan brought forth chocolate.  And woman gained pounds.  And God said, “I have sent you healthy vegetables and olive oil with which to cook them.  And Satan brought forth chicken fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And man gained pounds and his cholesterol went through the roof.

And God brought forth running shoes and man resolved to lose those extra pounds.  And Satan brought forth cable TV with remote control so man would not have to toil to change channels between ESPN and ESPN2.  And man gained pounds.  And God brought forth the potato, a vegetable naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition.  And Satan peel off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center in to chips and deep fat friend them.  And he created sour cream dip also.   And man clutched his remote control and ate potato chips swaddled in cholesterol.  And man went into cardiac arrest.  And God signed and created quadruple bypass surgery and Satan created HMOs and health insurance providers.” (from First Baptist Church Steve Davis.

Now I know why I am in the shape I am in, the Devil made me do it.  It’s not my fault!  Gene has a saying God made Chihuahua and he made St. Bernards we just happen to be St. Bernards.  For years I have accepted that as Gospel fact according to Gene, that I was fat and that was the way God made me!    I have used that as my excuse for not doing anything about my own personal health and fitness.  I am way too busy to exercise.  I don’t have time or money to prepare healthy meals

Somewhere along the way we have to accept responsibility for the shape we are in. We have to quit making excuses and do something about it. It is my responsibility to take care of myself so that I can do the best I can according to his will.  That is why I am going to go and sign up for the YMCA.  I will have to get up before the sun to make it work.  It isn’t going to be easy.

I need you to keep me accountable to take better care of myself, to go to the gym and not tasting everything at our potluck suppers.  I need you to encourage and support me, to help me find my real shape.

When it comes to our spiritual shape many of us are exactly as I have just described.   We have allowed ourselves to offer up all kinds of excuses for the spiritual shape we are in.  “I don’t really know anything about the Bible.”  I can’t quote scripture.  I don’t have any talents or gifts to use in the church.  I don’t have time to do anything.  I don’t fit in.  I don’t have a place.  The church doesn’t need me.  We have quit using our spiritual shape to glorify God and we have, well frankly, many of us have gotten fat and lazy.

Now I am not pointing fingers at anybody in particular.  We are all accountable for our spiritual shape.  We are all accountable for what happens in this church, in this community, accountable for the living presence of Christ here and now.

Paul in Ephesians 4 says that God has supernaturally given each of us a spiritual gift or shape so that we can make a difference in our community and around the globe. In fact we don’t just find this message in Ephesians we also find it in Romans 1; I Cor 1 and 26, in Philippians 3 and I Peter 2, 2 Peter.  Not one time but at least seven times the Bible declares that YOU haven been given a special ability or gift for ministry.  That is an incredible thought, isin’t it.  That God would give each of us a special gift according to the generosity of Christ.”
